December 14, 2017

Bloomberg Big Law Business featured Tarter Krinsky & Drogin in a feature story, "Improv, Golf Lessons All in a Day’s Work at This Firm.” The article highlighted TKD’s GOAL (Go Out Learn and Lead) Program, which encourages and sponsors employees to undertake a professional development goal or learning objective each year to enhance their skills.

The article noted that TKD is unique in that in provides the GOAL opportunity to every employee annually, both lawyers and staff, which are hallmarks of TKD’s inclusive and supportive culture.

As the article noted, “one of the program’s core purposes is to create an atmosphere where everyone can grow individually and professionally every day.” Managing partner Alan Tarter was quoted in the story noting, "It’s a good thing to do and it’s good for business…If you feel your firm’s behind you, your colleagues are behind you, there are no ceilings, you’re going to be a motivated employee.”

The article highlighted two TKD employees’ GOALS – counsel Debra Bodian Bernstein’s efforts to improve her think on her feet skills to improve her courtroom appearances by taking an improv class, and paralegal Hagit Feder’s coursework to become a certified fraud examiner, which has opened a lot of doors for her professionally. Several TKD attorneys, including partners, have followed in Hagit’s footsteps and earned the CFE certificate.

The article noted some of TKD employees' other novel goals, such as  golf lessons for a partner who felt inhibited about golf outings with clients, an Italian tutor for an attorney who works with Italian clients and providing a research assistant and time off for an employee who wrote and published a book on legal internships.

TKD’s GOAL program is purposely unstructured with no set budget for each goal. The firm works closely with each employee to tailor each goal and to help them accomplish it by providing time off as well as other necessary resources. The GOAL program is available to each employee each year, and once an employee has has completed a goal, they can apply for the firm to sponsor them for another.
